Pivoting quickly, I darted up the stairs, dodging past the onlookers, ignoring the smug grin on Idris and Boris’s faces as I weaved through them and flung open my bedroom door and headed straight for the duffel bags on the bed. I stripped off my tee as Edison stalked in and slammed the door behind me.

“By Eve, Callan. The place is in an uproar. The guard want to go with you, and Nickolai is failing to persuade them that they need to stay.”

“I’m no longer part of the court, Edison. I don’t care what the guard does,” I remarked as I stripped off my leggings and Edison swore, turning around as I stood in my boxer briefs and a sports bra. I yanked on a pair of black combat pants, slipped my feet into my boots and sank down to the floor to lace them up.

Edison turned round as I got to my feet, ignoring the fact I still wasn’t fully dressed as I riffled through my bag, my back to him.

“I’m coming with you.” There was a resolve in his voice that I had come to admire and trust, but Edison would not be following me this time.

“Nope. Not happening. Someone needs to watch Nickolai’s back.”

“Callan,” Edison snarled, “who is going to watch your back? It’s my job to do it.”

Turning to Edison, I blew out a breath. “Edison, there is a very high chance I won’t be coming back. You know that, right? This isn’t your fight anymore. You have to stay here.”

“Like hell I do!” His snarl filled the room, his temper flaring.

Rolling my eyes, I yanked a black and camo long-sleeved tee from my bag and pulled it on over my head, then slipped my arms into my sai straps, the ones Nickolai had once given me, and fastened them closed, my sai a familiar weight against my back.

I pulled a weapons belt out next and looped it through the holes in my pants. I began strapping an array of knives and throwing stars to my waist as Edison stood there watching me, his eyes bulging as I attached a grenade to one of the loops.

“By Eve, Ryan …”

I knew what he was thinking, but all I said as I continued to arm myself to the teeth was, “I have no intentions of being a prisoner ever again.”

It was a promise we shared after the torture we experienced after our time with Maxim, and I knew Edison understood that I would rather die than be anyone’s captive again. I slipped a cropped hoodie over my array of weapons.

“I’m not gonna let you go alone, Ryan. Let me get my weapons, and we can face this together. This is how we do this. You don’t go without me. You don’t get to leave me behind.”

“You don’t go without me. I’m not losing you to this, Ryan.”

Edison had said that to me once before, when I was half crazed and wanted to go back into the hellish prison Maxim and Dresden had forced into my mind.
